OpenFront is a massively multiplayer real-time strategy game where hundreds of real players battle simultaneously on a single shared world map. Build your economy, forge alliances, crush your enemies, and launch nuclear strikes — all in real time.
With over 1 million monthly active players on the web version, OpenFront comes to Steam with Steam achievements, exclusive cosmetics, and extra perks for everyone who supports the game here.
CONQUER THE WORLD
Every match starts the same way: you control a small patch of territory on a map shared by hundreds of other players. From there, it's up to you. Expand aggressively into undefended land. Pressure weaker neighbours. Accumulate gold, build your military, and push toward dominance — before someone else does the same to you.
DEEP STRATEGY. SIMPLE TO PICK UP.
OpenFront rewards smart play over raw aggression. Managing your economy is just as important as managing your army — overextend and you'll collapse, underinvest and you'll be steamrolled. The game layers genuine strategic depth onto controls anyone can learn in minutes:
Expand by directing your forces into unclaimed territory and weaker nations
Build ports, cities, and missile defences to strengthen your borders
Trade and negotiate — in-game ally requests let you broker truces with neighbours
Escalate from conventional warfare to nuclear strikes as the match reaches its endgame
Naval warfare adds a second front — control the seas to project power across the map
Multiple world maps each demand a different approach. Europe's choke points reward diplomacy and timing. Asia's open terrain favours rapid expansion. The global map brings full ocean control into play. Every map is a different puzzle.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN
Cosmetics in OpenFront are visible to every player in the match — your territory is your canvas. Equip territory patterns that change the look of every tile you control, from clean minimalist designs to full-scale meme skins. Fly one of hundreds of real-world flags. Personalise your profile with unlockable cosmetics earned through play or the in-game shop.
OpenFront will never be pay-to-win. Every cosmetic is visual only.
CLANS AND COMPETITIVE PLAY
OpenFront has an active grassroots competitive community. Clan tags are more than cosmetic — in team modes, players carrying the same tag are automatically fielded together, turning organised clans into genuine competitive units. Clan wins, losses, and win rates are tracked globally and compared on leaderboards.
OpenFront Masters is the official competitive organisation, running monthly cash-prized tournaments with referees, anti-cheat rules, and a Liquipedia presence. With over 10,000 members in the OFM Discord and a dedicated spectator format built for streaming, competitive OpenFront is already an established scene, not an afterthought. Ranked FFA is also on the way, coming to both Steam and the web.
BUILT WITH THE COMMUNITY
OpenFront started as an open-source project shaped entirely by player feedback, and that ethos carries into the Steam release. The public development roadmap is live on GitHub, updated regularly with what's being built and what's coming next. Bug reports, feature requests, and even code contributions from the community have directly shaped the game you're playing today. We also go live every other Friday to share what we're working on and answer your questions.
Jump into the Discord, follow the roadmap, and help build what comes next.
EARLY ACCESS
OpenFront launched on Steam in Early Access with a fully playable, polished core game — the same experience that has driven 1 million monthly players on the web. Early Access funds continued development, including:
Ranked FFA with an Elo system
Profile levelling and prestige
Clan Maps and Warchest, plus an expanded clan system with native leaderboards
A full mobile overhaul
New game modes and additional maps
Map and scenario creation, and Steam Workshop support
New cosmetics, territory skins, and subscriber perks
Performance improvements, including Linux and Steam Deck optimisation
The full roadmap is public, so you can see exactly what's being worked on and track progress as it happens.
PLAY ANYWHERE
OpenFront runs natively in the browser with no download required — the Steam version shares the same servers, the same players, and full cross-platform multiplayer. Start a match on Steam and play against someone on their phone. The community is one pool, wherever you play.
WHY STEAM THEN?
You may be looking at the above thinking, why would I buy OpenFront on Steam if I can play online for free? Buying on Steam directly funds the next cycle of OpenFront's development, and as a thank you, every Steam purchase gets:
A Verified name, forever
The ability to create your own custom lobbies, forever
Instant trusted account status
Unique cosmetics only available to Steam purchasers, including a new exclusive skin every month for six months
A one month subscription worth $9.99
A unique Discord rank to show your support
Steam achievements, with custom Trading Cards and profile banners on the way
Offline play and asset loading for improved performance, coming soon
Coming soon: Steam Plus — $4.99 a month
Steam owners will soon be able to pick up Steam Plus, which gives you the same Plutonium payouts as our $9.99 website subscription for half the price: 250 Plutonium every month when it renews, plus 10 Plutonium every day you're subscribed.
Do not buy OpenFront on Steam if you're expecting a materially different experience or features you wouldn't get on the web. There will never be gameplay on the Steam version that we don't also plan on releasing online too. That wouldn't be fair, and it would mean forgetting where we came from. But if you do decide to buy it and support us, thank you!
HOW WE USE AI
We believe in being open about this. OpenFront is built by a core team with over 20 years of combined coding experience and more than 300 community contributors, and our code is public on GitHub for anyone to see. We use AI as a development tool, the same way many studios do, to help us work faster. Cosmetic patterns are designed by artists, and if generative AI was used at any point in making a pattern, it's clearly labelled in the in-game store before you buy it.
