Grey Hack is a massively multiplayer hacking simulator. Work with other hackers or target their systems, using tools you can inspect, modify, and create yourself.
Make your mark on a shared world
The world keeps running when you log off. Your changes to shared systems can affect other players, and their actions can change what you find when you return. Share discoveries, coordinate attacks, or defend your computers from other hackers.
Form a guild, pool funds, and compete with rival guilds for control of companies. Upgrade your hardware and rent servers to support your next project.
Find a way in
Scan services, study your target, and look for an opening. Exploit vulnerable software, escalate your privileges, or use social engineering to trick an employee into opening a connection.
Firewalls, permissions, network layouts, and software versions shape your approach. Administrators can detect intrusions and trace connections, so plan ahead and cover your tracks.
For a deeper challenge, investigate rumors of undiscovered vulnerabilities, identify errors in code, and develop exploits or patches.
Rewrite any command
Every terminal command is a GreyScript program, with source code you can open, read, and modify in the game's code editor. Learn how a utility works, change its behavior, or use it as a starting point for something new. Even the shell that interprets your commands is written in GreyScript, and you can create your own.
Use the same scripting language to create commands, automate tasks, write exploits, and share your tools with other hackers. Run what you build in the Unix-style terminal and put it to work across the network.
Follow the evidence
Take contracts from hackshops and the police to earn money and reputation. Trace evidence through files, emails, and connected networks as you investigate fraud, extortion, and corporate espionage.
Explore further to discover hidden jobs, access surveillance cameras, and uncover evidence of crimes. Report what you find or use it for blackmail. Your actions affect your karma and the opportunities that open up.
Give other hackers something to discover
Host an in-game website to share your work, or create Capture the Flag challenges for other players. Configure the network, design the challenge, and script the conditions for success.
Explore on your own terms
Single player offers a separate local world that pauses when you leave and resumes when you return. Tutorials and an in-game manual introduce the tools. Experiment, learn how they work together, and choose your next target.
Roadmap
Grey Hack is currently in beta (version 0.9). The development roadmap is available in the game's Steam forum. I welcome suggestions from the community, so if there's a feature you'd like to see, feel free to share your ideas on Steam or Discord.
